Leon Ehlers

Leon Ehlers, age 73, of Aurora, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 1st at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton. Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: LEON EHLERS

Leon Ehlers, the son of Leonard and Olga (Walters) Ehlers, was born in Cordova, Nebraska on March 17, 1933 and died in Grand Island, Nebraska on March 28, 2006, at the age of 73.

Leon graduated from Cordova High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. Leon served in the Korean War and went onto retire from the Air Force after serving for 20 years.

On February 13, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marion Doyle. They had three children: Elainia, Lonnie and Doug. When Leon retired from the Air Force in 1971 the family moved to Kansas, where Leon’s father had a custom combine crew that worked from Oklahoma to the Canadian border. In 1983 they moved to Aurora, where Leon worked at Soukup Manufacturing and also worked for Ken Wortman doing construction jobs.

Leon was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Leon raised vegetables and sold them on the Town Square. He enjoyed volunteering with Ducks Unlimited and the Pheasants Forever.

He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers, Arlan, Willard and LaVern.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marion Ehlers of Aurora; three children, Elainia (Ken) Barber of Grand Island, Lonnie (Marylyn) Ehlers of Aurora and Doug Ehlers of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and his mother, Olga Ehlers of Waco and a brother, Ronald (Doris) Ehlers of California.
