Cleda GiffinFuneral Services were held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 2, 1988 at the Aurora United Methodist Church. Interment was held in the Aurora Cemetery. OBITUARY: Cleda Giffin Cleda Giffin, the daughter of Charles and Fern (Hill) Martin, was born at St. Edward, Nebraska, on September 22, 1919, and passed away March 28, 1988 at George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C. at the age of 68 years, 6 months, and 6 days. She grew up near Albion and graduated from Albion High School. She was a 1941 graduated of the nursing school at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and was a nurse there for 6 years. On August 29, 1942, she was united in marriage to Dr. Herbert M. Giffin, at Rochester, Minnesota. She worked as a nurse in Rochester, while her husband was in the service, and in 1944 they moved to Annapolis, then Philadelphia, and in 1947 to Washington, D.C. She didn’t practice nursing again, as she was busy raising a family. Cleda had done volunteer work with the National Capitol Historical Society and served on the ladies’ board of George Washington University Hospital. She also was a member of the Capitol Speakers Club and the Washington Club. She had been a member of Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church since 1950. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Martin. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her husband, Dr. Herbert M. Giffin; 2 sons, Dr. Charles B. Giffin of Tucson, Arizona and Robert Giffin of Philadelphia; 2 daughters, Claire Lee Shumaker of Annandale, Virginia and Arlene Bartelmes of Ellicott City, Maryland; her mother Fern Martin Hutchinson of Aurora, and 7 grandchildren. |
