Melvin Hedlund

Mel Hedlund, age 92, of Aurora, died Thursday afternoon, November 14, 2002, at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, November 18th at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Aurora. Rev. Karl Larson will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: MELVIN HEDLUND

Melvin Lewis Hedlund, the son of Lewis and Ida Augusta (Erikson) Hedlund, was born at Aurora, Nebraska on October 30, 1910 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on November 14, 2002, at the age of 92.

Melvin grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. He worked on farms around Aurora and also worked at the Einer Peterson Clothing Store in Aurora. During World War II, Mel served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and was involved in many of the battles held in the Pacific. Upon his discharge in 1946, he began working at the Farmers State Bank and was employed there until his retirement in 1975.

Melvin was united in marriage to Vera Ahlquist on November 21, 1948 at Stromsburg. After his retirement they enjoyed traveling and working in their yard.

Mel was an active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and was their Treasurer for many years. He was a member of the American Legion & V.F.W. Mel was an avid hunter, fisherman and fan of Aurora High School sports and Cornhusker Football.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Alice and Vivian Hedlund.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are his wife Vera Hedlund of Aurora; one son, Louis Hedlund and his wife Carla of Lincoln; two granddaughters, Maggie and Anna Hedlund of Lincoln and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Verner and Edith Ahlquist of Stromsburg.
