Avis HillisFuneral Services were held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 6, 1994 at the Aurora Presbyterian United Church of Christ. Interment was held in the Aurora Cemetery. OBITUARY: Avis Hillis Mary Avis Hillis, the daughter of Jacob and Almira (Bruss) Mater, was born near Fullerton, Nebraska, on February 1, 1888, the winter of the Nebraska great blizzard, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, on December 31, 1993, at the age of 105 years, 10 months, and 30 days. She received her education at schools in Fullerton and Fremont High School, graduating with the class of 1905, and attended Normal Training. She then began teaching in Dodge County Logan Creek School, then she moved to Hamilton County, where she taught near Phillips and Aurora, before returning to Waterloo elementary in Dodge County. On August 15, 1910, she was united in marriage to Stanley Hillis in Fremont. They lived on his farm until they built their house in Aurora, and raised a son Deryl, who died in June of 1979. Mr. Hillis preceded her in death on July 23, 1944. During the depression years from 1919 to 1956, she became a sales lady for Spencer Inc, the makers of body supports, until her retirement. In 1981, she entered the Hamilton Manor Rest Home in Aurora. Avis was a member of the Aurora Presbyterian United Church of Christ, was an active member of the Aurora Community, involved in the Red Cross, and Women’s Club Organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son Deryl. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her daughter-in-law Arelene Hillis of Grand Island; 2 grandchildren, Robert Hillis of Fremont, and Cheryl Beck of Irvine, California; 4 great grandchildren, Ashley and Christopher Hillis, and Bryan and Kevin Beck. |
