Walter Hudson

Funeral Services were held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, October 24, 1989 at Higby Mortuary. Interment was held in the Aurora Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Walter Hudson

James Walter Hudson, the son of Jay and Alice (Anderson) Hudson, was born at Whitwell, Tennessee, on July 20, 1893, and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska, on October 20, 1989, at the age of 96 years and 3 months.

He grew up and attended school at Whitwell and graduated from high school there. He taught school for two years in the area. In 1915, he came to Hampton. He did farm work in Nebraska and Dakota. In 1917, he moved to Marquette where he worked in the general store.

On June 28, 1918, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in England and France during World War I, and was discharged in June of 1919. After the war he returned to Marquette, where he ran the Marquette Mercantile.

On August 28, 1919, he married Emma Pedersen at Marquette. She died January 10, 1922. In 1943, he closed the store. He later was elected county treasurer for Hamilton County.

On February 21, 1943, he married Thelma Eggert Eddy. After spending 6 ½ years as county treasurer he became general manager of General Telephone Company in Aurora, serving in that capacity for 15 years before retiring.

While in Marquette he served 25 yeas on the volunteer fire department. In Aurora, he served 10 years on the city council, 3 of those years as chairman, and 7 years on the school board, including 3 years as president. He was a member of the Aurora American Legion post and had served as commander among other offices. He had been on the state telephone board for 10 years, serving one year as president. He served 26 years as treasurer of the Veterans Service Committee. He served on the Crossroads Court Board, 2 years as its secretary, and for 2 years was secretary/manager of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. Shortly after retirement he was mayor of Aurora for 4 years, and had served many years on the Aurora Cemetery Board.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Thelma of Aurora; a daughter, Pauline McCray of Sunnyvale, California; a son Roderick Eddy of Pinehurst, North Caroline; a brother, Charles of Cleveland, Tennessee; a sister Thelma; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Martha, Ethel and Pearl; and 3 brothers, Roy, Raymond and Albert.
