Virginia Humphrey

Virginia Humphrey, age 80, of Giltner, died Tuesday morning, May 29, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday at the United Methodist Church in Giltner. Rev. Nora Leeds will officiate. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery near Giltner. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M., Thursday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: VIRGINIA HUMPHREY

Virginia Elaine Humphrey, the daughter of Louis and Clara (Thompkins) Nelson, was born in Inland, Nebraska on December 1, 1920 and died in Grand Island, Nebraska on May 29, 2001, at the age of 80 years.

She grew up in Inland and Hastings. Virginia graduated from Hastings High School. She was a secretary for the War Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II.

Virginia was united in marriage to Donald Humphrey on August 28, 1948 at Hastings. She lived 52 years on a farm south of Giltner, where she was an active farm wife and mother to their five children. During those years Virginia served as secretary for the United Methodist Church in Giltner and drove the Kindergarten school bus for Giltner Public Schools.

Virginia was a member of the United Methodist Church in Giltner and its' Women's Groups, the Greenwood Club and Eastern Star.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Janet Sittler, an infant brother, and son-in-law, Lt. Col. William C. Hutchison.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Don Humphrey of Giltner; five children, Shirley Hutchison of Omaha, Harvey Humphrey of Giltner, Loren Humphrey and his wife Cindy of Grand Island, Allen Humphrey and his wife Ielene of Giltner and Holly Brooks and her husband Rick of Doniphan and 15 grandchildren.
