Devonne Humphrey

Devonne Humphrey, age 101, of Giltner, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at the Hamilton Manor.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 23rd at the Giltner United Methodist Church. Rev. Marta Wheeler will officiate. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. OBITUARY: DEVONNE HUMPREY

Devonne Humphrey, the daughter of Harvey and Cora Ann (Van Horn) Scobie, was born at Aurora, Nebraska on August 13, 1908 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on November 18, 2009 at the age of 101.

Devonne was the oldest of 6 children. She graduated from Aurora High School in May 1925. At the age of 16, she took Normal training and taught school from 1925 – 1935 in Hamilton and Clay Counties.

Devonne married Harold Humphrey on February 23, 1935 at Lincoln, Nebraska and moved to Giltner area, where she raised her family. Harold passed away on October 24, 1973.

Devonne was an active member in Eastern Star for 50+ years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora, The Retired Teachers Association, Giltner’s Greenwood Club and Birthday Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Susan Kay, two brothers and a sister.

Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Sondra and Jerome Twibell of Glenville, Georgia, son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Janet Humphrey of Giltner; 4 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nadean Hoelck and Marilyn Lynch both of Grand Island and many nieces and nephews.
