Gladys Hurd

Gladys Hurd, age 78, of Aurora died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Memorial Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 10th at the Higby-McQuiston Chapel. Rev. Seth Leypoldt will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: GLADYS HURD

Gladys Ellen Hurd, the daughter of John Joseph and Gladys Viola (McAdams) Finn, was born in Manhattan, New York on February 22, 1925 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on May 6, 2003, at the age of 78.

Gladys was raised in Astoria and Long Island, New York. She attended PS #51 in Astoria. She later attended Vocational High School, where she learned dressmaking. Gladys worked in the Boston Navy Yard during WW II as a welder on Navy vessels.

Gladys was united in marriage to Howard Engert Hurd on October 30, 1952 at Greeley, Colorado. Howard began driving a truck as an owner/operator. Gladys was the household engineer.

Gladys was a member of Tops 280, where she was crowned Queen in 1985. She was active in the Orphan Train Society, loved to fish and going to horse races and figure 8 Derby Races. Gladys also enjoyed her grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three children, Thomas Haas, Gary Engert and Marjorie Kidd and two sisters.

Gladys is survived by her 10 children, 5 sons, James Engert and his wife Dusty of Sidney, William Engert and his wife Jill of Jefferson, South Dakota, Renard Engert and his wife Annie of Grand Island, Loren Engert and his wife Cheiko of Dalhart, Texas and Carlin Engert and his wife Chris of Aurora; 5 daughters, Gladys Gustafson and her husband Lyal of Madison, Wisconsin, Frances Weisgerber and her husband Brian of Boonsboro, Maryland, Renee Enderle and her husband Chuck of Aurora, Martha Engert of Aurora and Lorene Engert of Lincoln; 42 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Beard of Columbia, SC and her brother-in-law, Bob Ellis of Arizona.
