She grew up and received her education at Naponee. After graduating she attended Hastings College, where she had several classmates whose names were Helen. “That’s Peggy O’Neill”, was a popular song at that time and to lessen the confusion, Helen was called Peggy or Peg, a name that was to remain hers the rest of her life. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska, and received her BS degree in secondary education. Upon graduation she moved to Broken Bow, where she worked for the Federal Rehabilitation Office. It was there she met Floyd Lewin, who was also employed by the same office. They were married July 2, 1939, in Naponee. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1977. They purchased a farm near Comstock and began farming, and she began her teaching career in the late 1940’s. She taught High School until her retirement in 1978, and upon retirement she moved her mobile home to the farm of her oldest son Byron, north of Aurora, where she remained until her death. Following her retirement in Aurora, she became very active in the Aurora Evangelical Covenant Church, where she was a member. She was also active in the community and helped deliver meals on wheels, and did volunteer work at the Plainsman Museum. She was also a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Frank and Lloyd O’Neill. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her three sons, Byron and his wife Maxine of Aurora, Frank and his wife Jeanie of Ord, and Robert and his wife Ellen, of North Charleston, South Carolina; one daughter Marianne Lewin of Bakersfield, California; one brother, James O’Neill and his wife Jean of Los Gatos, California; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and long time friends. |
