Edward 'Ted'Mapes

Funeral Services were held 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 26, 1996 at Higby Mortuary. Inurnment was held at the Aurora Cemetery.

OBITUARY: “Ted” Mapes

Edward Victor “Ted” Mapes, the son of Benjamin and Louisa (Reinhard) Mapes, was born at Phillips, Nebraska, on February 14, 1899, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, on February 22, 1996, at the age of 97 years, and 8 days.

He grew up on the family farm and received his education at Phillips.

On December 23, 1918, he was united in marriage to Viola Sloan at the courthouse in Grand Island. Their first married years were spent farming in the Phillips area. Later, “Ted” worked on various projects including the building of Highway #11 to Ord. He also traveled with “Santa Claus” Earl Hammond when he would take his animal and Christmas show across the United States. In the early 1940’s he started to work for the electric company in Aurora, and then for the gas company, working there until his retirement in 1965. Ted and Viola were custodians for the Hamilton Telephone Company until they retired in 1976. His retirement years were spent traveling all over the state. For the past several years he had resided at the Memorial Community Care in Aurora. Viola preceded him in death on February 27, 1988.

“Ted” was affiliated with the Aurora First Christian Church and he enjoyed football, professional wrestling, playing cards, and teasing his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Margery Graham; 3 brothers, Frank, Irving, and Lester; 5 sisters, Annabell, Cora, May, Clara and Ethel, and his son-in-law Jack Graham.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his 4 grandchildren, Pat and Dick Phillips of Aurora; Mary and Bob Patterson of Littleton, Colorado; Donna and Bob Phillips of Aurora; and Suzanne and Jack Graham of Lincoln; 9 great grandchildren, JoAnna & Dan Phillips; Jennifer and Leigh Patterson; Jody, Julie & Justin Phillips and Ricky Bradley and Morgan Graham.
