Richard’s childhood was spent on a farm near Fairfield, Nebraska where he graduated from high school in 1925. In 1929 he married Mabel Marie Nickel in Clay Center, Nebraska.

Richard and Mabel have spent their lives as Nebraska farmers, starting in Clay County soon after they were married. They moved to a farm near Aurora, Nebraska in 1942, where they lived and worked for 28 years. In 1970 they moved to Imperial, Nebraska, farming until retirement in 1978. In January of this year they celebrated their fifty wonderful years of marriage with a Golden Anniversary dinner in Imperial and an open house in Aurora.

Although his greatest joy was always his family, Richard had many interests and was active in several organizations. He was a former board member of the United Methodist Church in Aurora, and a member of the Imperial United Methodist Church. He was a Past Master of the Aurora Masonic Lodge, a member of the Royal Arch and the Knights Templar in Grand Island, a member of the Tehama Temple, Shrine of North America in Hastings, and Past Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star in Aurora. He loved University of Nebraska football games, and was a longstanding member of the Touchdown Club, an organization that helps to supply athletic scholarships to University students.

Richard was preceded in death by his father and mother, Homer L. and Mary E. (Bayles) McKelvie, and two brothers, Carl L. and H. Donald McKelvie.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel McKelvie of Imperial, one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley R. and Jean McKelvie of Moraga, California, one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jean and Donald L. Johnson of Littleton, Colorado, grandchildren, Sheri Jo McKelvie of Moraga, California, Judith Ann (Johnson) Randol and grandson-in-law Jody Lee Randol of Wauneta, Nebraska, Michael D. Johnson of Fort Collins, Colorado, Terry Lee Johnson of Greeley, Colorado, and great-grandson, Jeffrey Lee Randol of Wauneta, Nebraska. His greatest love was this family, with who he had many happy times. They will miss him greatly.
