Walter Meier

Funeral Services were held 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 16, 1997 at the Aurora Messiah Lutheran Church. Interment was held in the Aurora Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Walter Meier

Walter LaVerne Meier, Jr., the son of Walter and Katherine (Winterhalter) Meier, was born at Kirtly, Wyoming, on September 15, 1920, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, on June 13, 1997, at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 18 days.

He grew up in Harrison, Nebraska, and graduated from Sioux County High School. He worked in Alliance for the Pepsi Cola Company. He served his country during World War 2, from April 17, 1945 until his discharge on April 16, 1946, in the U.S. Navy.

On August 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to LaVelle Cox at Chadron, Nebraska. After his discharge from the service they moved to Aurora where he operated a grocery store and movie theater for over 25 years. He was also Aurora Park and Recreation Superintendent for 19 years, until his retirement.

Walt was a member of the Aurora Messiah Lutheran Church; belonged to the American Legion, was a past member of the Lions and Rotary Club, and the Aurora Fire Department; her served on the city council for a number of years. He was secretary and treasure of Bader Park since it’s opening in 1984.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife LaVelle of Aurora; 2 sons Terry and his wife Cheryl of Wheatland, Wyoming, Greg and his wife Connie of Aurora; one sister Mildred Zerbst of Lusk, Wyoming; and 4 grandchildren, Scott Meier of Redlands, California and Skip Meier of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Monica and Brent Meier both of Aurora.
