SWEDE PEARD

Louis “Swede” Peard, age 72, of Phillips, died Thursday, August 29, 2002, at St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. Tuesday, September 3, at the United Methodist Church in Phillips with Rev. Nora Leeds officiating. Interment will be at the Phillips Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 P. M. Monday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: SWEDE PEARD

Louis J. “Swede” Peard, the son of Frank and Opal (Hickman) Peard, was born in Phillips Nebraska on February 7, 1930 and died in Grand Island, Nebraska on August 29, 2002 at the age of 72.

He grew up and attended school in the Phillips community, graduating from Phillips High School in 1947. He worked road construction for Peter Kiewit until entering the Army. He served in Taegue, South Korea from 1951 to 1953.

On October 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to Shirley Keller at York. They farmed south of Phillips until he semi-retired one year ago. Swede still remained active until the time of his death.

Swede has served as past president of the Hamilton County Feeders, and had been the recipient of the Long Time Feeders Award. He was a charter member and past president of the Phillips Lions Club. He was a member of the Eagles Club, Platt-Duetsche, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Phillips United Methodist Church.

Swede enjoyed his horses, attending cattle sales, and being involved in his grandkids’ activities. He was an active participant in the Phillips community.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife Shirley of Phillips, his son Russell and his wife Randyce of Phillips, his daughter Dixie Mullaly and her husband Steve of Evergreen, Colorado, one brother Robert and his wife Mary Ann of Phillips, one sister Fern Huffman of Denver, Colorado, 3 grandchildren, Andy, Chrissy, and Ben Peard of Phillips, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
