Anna Purdy

Anna (Anne) Purdy, age 88, formerly of Hampton, died Monday, September 21, 2009, at the Hamilton Manor.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 24th at the Higby-McQuiston Chapel in Aurora. Fr. Dennis Hunt will officiate. Interment will be in Phillips Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 6 P.M. Wednesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Alzheimers Association. OBITUARY: ANNA PURDY

Anna Purdy, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Rothmeier) Seidl, was born in Neufarn, Germany on August 27, 1921 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on September 21, 2009, at the age of 88.

At age 5, she moved with her family to Stuttgart-Bad Constatt where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from the Stuttgart-Bad Constatt Catholic Girls School in 1938. She took a one-year secretarial and accounting course and was employed by the Stuttgart City Labor Department. During World War II, she worked with the German Red Cross as a nursing assistant. In 1946 she worked as an interpreter and translator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

She married Sergeant Major Maynard Purdy at Stuttgart-Bad Constatt, Germany on May 10, 1952 and with their daughter, Anita, they came to the United States later in the same year. Her husband was a career soldier and she accompanied him on tours of duty in Grand Island, Nebraska, Fort Riley, Kansas, the territory of Alaska, and Lincoln, Nebraska. In Alaska she worked for the Northern Defense Command and in Lincoln at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Her husband retired from the military service in 1965 and they moved to Hampton, Nebraska where he was appointed a rural mail carrier.

Anna liked horses and assisted her husband in raising and racing thoroughbred horses for several years.

Anna was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eight & Forty Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Maynard Purdy of Hampton and daughter, Anita Purdy of Omaha.
