OBITUARY: Esther Lina Rasmussen Esther Lina Rasmussesn, the daughter of Henry and Sophia (Juengel) Meier, was born south of Lincoln, Kansas, on April 18, 1898, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, on September 6, 1993, at the age of 95 years, 4 months, and 18 days. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, south of Lincoln, Kansas, and attended parochial school (which was taught in the German language) for 7 years, and then public schools for 3 years. She then worked as a housekeeper in Hinsdale, Indiana. Later she worked in the knitting mill and attended business college in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and worked for Karl Menninger in the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, and later did nursing in the Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln, Kansas. On March 31, 1929, she was united in marriage to Christian B. Rasmussen at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 28, 1973. In 1974, she moved from her farm home near Denmark to Lincoln, Kansas, and after breaking her hip she moved to Post Rock Apartments, and after she broke a second hip, in 1985, she entered the Hamilton Manor in Aurora, Nebraska, to be near her daughter. Esther was the Denmark news correspondent for many years, and was active in the Denmark Ladies and Bethlehem Lutheran Ladies as long as she was able. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Karl; 4 sisters, Meta Meier, Malinda Steinhaus, Amanda Heine, and Sophie Heine. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her 3 sons, Ray and Keith of Lincoln, Kansas, and Erik of Concordia, Kansas; one daughter, Joy Jacobsen of Marquette, Nebraska; one sister Paula Goldgrabe of Sylvan Grove, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. |
