Ernst Riekenberg

Ernst Riekenberg, age 93, of Hampton died Thursday, October 28, 1999, at The Hearthstone in York.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church north of Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M., Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

OBITUARY: ERNST RIEKENBERG

Ernst H. Riekenberg, the son of Fred and Emilie (Hornbostel) Riekenberg, was born in Linn, Kansas, on June 17, 1906 and died at York, Nebraska on October 28, 1999, at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 11 days.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palmer, Kansas. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School. He entered Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska in 1921. He attended the Vicarage at Bethlehem Lutheran in Bremen, Kansas in 1925-26. He returned and graduated from Concordia in 1928.

On July 1, 1928, he was united in marriage to Elsie Loemker at Bremen, Kansas.

Ernst received his BS in Education in 1959. Ernst taught at the following schools: St. John’s Lutheran at Hooker, Okla., St. John’s Lutheran at Palmer, Kansas, St. Mark’s Lutheran at Ruskin, Public and Religion Summer School at Filley, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Preston, Kansas, Immanuel Lutheran at Breckinridge, Oklahoma, Trinity Lutheran at Hebron and Zion Lutheran at Hampton. He retired in 1973. Ernst continued as Church organist (part-time) and conducted Bible Classes at Hamilton Manor and Bethesda Center. He transcribed German script documents for Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and five brothers, Rudolf, Ludwig, Arnold, Fred and Robert.

He is survived by two sons, Dennis and his wife Joyce of Hordville and Larry and his wife Sharon of Lincoln; two daughters, Joann Schardt and her husband Norris of Davenport, Nebraska and Vivian Frost and her husband Kenneth of Fremont; two brothers, Reinhardt of Filer, Idaho and Paul of Linn, Kansas; one sister, Paulina of Linn, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
