Jona Ross

Funeral Services were held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 1, 1980 at the Aurora United Methodist Church. Interment was held in the Aurora Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Jona Ross

Jona H. Ross, the son of Henry and Katherine (Brehm) Ross, was born at Stockham, Nebraska, on May 31, 1912, and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska, on March 29, 1989, at the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 28 days.

He grew up and graduated from Stockham and attended Hastings College, where he received a teaching degree.

On August 6, 1933, he married Mildred McVey at her home in Sutton. He taught in rural schools for 5 ½ years.

Jona served in the United States Army from December 20, 1943, until May 10, 1946. After his discharge he was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Omaha, and later became a mail clerk on the railroad between Omaha and Cheyenne. He retired from the mail service on November 24, 1967, and became a prominent Aurora farmer, until retiring in the spring of 1988.

He was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and served on several committees. He sang in the church choir and the Men’s chorus and was active in the Sunday School Program. He was also a member of the American Legion in Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Henry, Dave, Reuben, Sam and an infant brother Alex; 7 sisters, Sarah, Rose, Hannah, Elma, Rachel and Tena; 2 granddaughters, Natalie Ross and Peggy Oswald Neil, and one great-grandchild.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife Mildred of Aurora; one son, Gary of Las Vegas, Nevada; 2 daughters, Jerolyn Oswald of Beautiful, Utah and Linda Happy of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother, Herbert Ross of Aurora; a sister, Elda Goertzen of Salinas, California; an adopted brother, Milton Ross of Santa Clara, California; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
