Evan Smith

Evan Smith, age 85, of Aurora died Friday morning, February 18, 2000, at the Palmer Nursing Home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday at Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora. Rev. George Damm of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hampton will officiate.

OBITUARY: EVAN SMITH

Evan L. Smith, the son of Elbert and Carrie (Glenn) Smith, was born in Brown County, Nebraska on June 3, 1914 and died in Palmer, Nebraska on February 18, 2000, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 15 days.

He grew up near Broken Bow where they lived on a cincade during his early years. He went to country school and later to Broken Bow. He left school after the 9th grade.

Evan was united in marriage to Margaret Wilson on October 11, 1934. They lived in Seneca, Nebraska where he drove a truck and later worked for the railroad. He also owned and ran a pool hall in Seneca. He was a pilot and flew his own plane while he lived in Seneca. He made trips to Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas and South Dakota. He was known for buzzing low over Seneca. They moved to Grand Island in the “50’s” where he worked for Wilson Concrete for several years. They moved to a farm by Worms, Nebraska and later to Marquette where they lived for several years. They also lived in Hampton and in Aurora, where he drove a truck until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Robert Smith, one daughter, Peggy Smith; one grandson, Larry Dean Schaffert and one great-granddaughter, Jordan Schaffert.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of Hamilton Manor of Aurora; two daughters, Donita (Larry) Schaffert of Aurora and Linda (Roger) Morse of St. Paul; one sister, Babe Hendrickson of Thedford; one brother, Kenneth “Red” Smith of Sturgis, South Dakota; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.
