OBITUARY: Bessie Woods

Bessie Isabel Woods, the daughter of Orlando and Elizabeth (Baxter) Guard, was born at Aurora, Nebraska, on August 17, 1893, and passed away at Hastings, Nebraska, on February 20, 1990, at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 3 days.

She grew up and attended school in Aurora.

On November 30, 1910, she was united in marriage to Ralph Woods at Aurora. They started a trucking business called Woods Truck Lines of Aurora, and in 1933 the business was moved to Hastings. The truck line services all towns on Highway #6 between Omaha and Denver. On May 12, 1942, Mr. Woods died, and that same year the business was sold to Buckingham Transportation Company. Bessie then continued raising her family and she went to work as a supervisor for NAD in the paper cutting department. She held this job through the war years. She then went to work as a matron at Sunnyside Home, a job she held for 18 years. She retired at the age of 70. After her retirement she spent her time caring for grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to read, crochet, braid rugs and paint textiles. On November 1, 1985, she moved to Perkins at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, where she has since resided.

Bessie was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Hastings, and was also past president of the Womens Relief Corps.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 brothers, and 4 sisters; children, Ruie, Ralph Eugene and Roger.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are son, Kenneth of Eugene, Oregon; 4 daughters, Doris Koch of Hastings; Betty Fullerton and Darlene Lapp of Shell Knob, Missouri, and Marilyn Skarin of Blue Hill; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
