Shorty Zehr

Shorty Zehr, age 89, of Aurora, died Thursday morning, May 10, 2001, at Memorial Long Term.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday at United Methodist Church in Aurora. Dr. Joe Scahill will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M., Friday at Higby Mortuary. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

OBITUARY: CLAIR "SHORTY" ZEHR

Clair Eugene "Shorty" Zehr, the son of Joel and Gertie (Peterson) Zehr, was born on a farm south of Aurora, Nebraska on October 1, 1911 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on May 10, 2001, at the age of 89 years.

Shorty attended Hamilton County rural school and attended Aurora High School. He began farming south of Aurora.

Shorty was united in marriage to Alyda Toof on January 15, 1933 in Kearney, Nebraska. They moved to Aurora, where Shorty began selling cars for Sandin's Auto Company in 1933 until 1941, when he operated the old Sinclair Station in downtown Aurora until 1946. He then sold cars for Cliff Rose and Wortman Motor Company and Newman Motor Company and then operated the new Sinclair Station until 1970. He was then employed as advertising salesman for the Aurora News Register until 1979. Alyda passed away on May 1, 1975.

On April 2, 1978 Shorty married Evelyn Cox Williams in McCook.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE #604 in Grand Island. Shorty enjoyed golfing, fishing and was an avid Nebraska Football Fan.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alyda, two sisters, Alice Bowman and Fay Wagoner, brother, Paul Zehr, and stepson, James (Jim) Williams.

Shorty is survived by his wife Evelyn of Aurora; daughter, Beverly Jean Salmon and her husband Jim of Evansville, Indiana; son, Rick Zehr and his wife Connie of Lincoln; stepdaughter, Karen Marie Wilshusen and her husband Stan of Aurora; 4 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren.
